“I bought it in Thailand”. That clichéd phrase you hear all too often that educes more jealousy than you’d care to admit. Now it’s your turn to reap what this shopping mecca can sow. From those hungry for a bargain to those desperate for designers, no one leaves Bangkok feeling unsatisfied. The markets are where you will find the lifeblood of the city vigorously pumping. Take magazine snippets and watch the incredible transformation of your catwalk fantasy becoming your spare change reality. Then delve into the malls for leather so soft it sends tingles down your spine and brands that are completely untouchable at home.
Bali is an all-inclusive shopping destination that will satisfy the needs of every style of shopper. Stroll the infamous streets of Seminyak for boutique stores showcasing street-wear designers like Shakuhachi and Cheap Monday; explore the tree-lined lanes of Ubud for teak furntiure and unique handicrafts; lap up the luxury of air-conditioned DFS Galleria in Kuta for a huge range of discount cosmetics and designers like Dior and Fendi; or bag a bargain at street stalls in Nusa Dua or Jimbaran Bay. This island is a shopping mecca beyond your wildest wardrobe dreams.
Singapore's shopping is up with the best in the world. From the designer boutiques and department stores of Orchard Road, to the cameras and electronic goods on offer in China Town, it’s all at your fingertips at a fraction of the usual price. Singapore also offers shoppers eclectic finds beyond the typical mass produced goods that are expected in Asia. Head to markets like Flea and Easy, Sungei Road Thieves’ Market or the market of artists and designers known as “MAAD”, and snatch up something completely unique. Remember to factor in GST and act cautiously when bargaining – it may offend some retailers as it is not accepted everywhere.
When the days are cold and the pubs are dry, there’s nothing more enjoyable to do in Dublin than hit the streets for some retail therapy. The city’s two shopping hubs are conveniently located just a few minutes walk from each other over the picturesque O'Connell Bridge. On the Northside is Henry Street, which offers mainstream fashion in shopping centres like The ILAC as well as the Moore Street outdoor food market that boasts flowers, horse-drawn carts and the chance to engage in Irish banter. On the Southside, Grafton Street offers a more upmarket experience with exquisite jewellery and the Brown Thomas department store.
The USA is one of the only countries in the world with a shopping strip so famous, even the street name is known by the international community! From the glitz and glamour of Rodeo Drive to the paradise of thrift shops weaved through Hollywood, Los Angeles is a shopping mecca that will tickle even the trickiest of taste buds. Further inland, visit the Fashion Outlets of Las Vegas in Primm, or the celebrity loved European style shopping of Le Boulevard at Paris. There’s never been a better time to convert your pennies and shop up a storm in the fashion savvy USA.
Hong Kong
Hong Kong and Macau are the perfect destinations to pick up the kinds of luxurious consumer goods you can’t always indulge in at home. From designer sunglasses and handbags to glamorous jewellery and electrical goods like laptops, phones and cameras. From Kate Middleton to Kate Moss and tartan to Top Shop, English fashion is as distinct as a Tetley Tea. Providing the world with endless fashion inspiration since the dawn of catwalks, this is a place to be swept away by city style and European glamour. London in particular is where England’s most extensive fashion offerings can be found. Shop well-known stores and designer outlets in the Oxford Street, experience elegance in Regent Street near Piccadilly Circus or pick up vintage clothes, rare antiques and books aplenty in Notting Hill. Pack a spare empty bag, your credit card and walking shoes and get ready to shop for hours on end.
France has been synonymous with fashion for decades. Being the birthplace of Christian Dior, Coco Chanel and Louis Vuitton, it’s little wonder we use the term “Parisian Chic”. Beyond the ritzy designers, style can be found in every corner of the city, from glamorous locals at a corner café, to boho markets and fur clad vintage boutiques. Visit The Faubourg Saint-Honoré district to get decked out in designer clothing; walk Rue des Francs-Bourgeois for jewellery and eclectic fashion; or head to The Saint-Ouen flea markets for one off oddities and designer discounts. And do it all in a beret and black and white stripes.
United Arab Emirates
Rich in natural resources and thriving with entrepreneurial spirit, the United Arab Emirates boast an enviable economy that has subsequently shaped an even more enviable shopping scene. Shopping centres here are often referred to as small cities, with the likes of Abu Dhabi’s Marina Mall boasting an indoor Snow World and Dubai’s main mall encompassing an extravagant aquarium - both on top of a plethora of shops, dining options and cinemas. For a more traditional shopping experience, head to the souks and bargain yourself a camel leather handbag, shisha pipe or a patterned maroon carpet.
Nestled between the diverse countries of Morocco, Portugal and France, Spain’s fashion scene is a unique and flavoursome blend of exotic meets modern. No matter your style, you’ll be satisfied by a Spanish shopping spree. International designers, street wear stores and major chains – it’s all here and more. Shop up a storm in favourites like H&M and Top Shop or find something more unusual at Barcelona’s Fira de Nautumismo markets or the boutique district of Salamanca in Madrid.
